Nosso passado retoma a colonização portuguesa, que ocorreu após o "descobrimento" e que encontrou resistência no litoral das tribos indígenas dos Potiguaras e Tabajaras, e no interior dos Cariris.
Em meados de agosto de 1585, foi firmado um acordo entre populações indígenas e os portugueses. As negociações foram pacíficas entre o representante indígena, o Chefe Piragibe, e português, João Tavares. Neste mesmo ano era fundado o estado e a cidade de João Pessoa, que antes de ter este nome, em homenagem ao célebre filho paraibano que foi brutalmente assassinado num café popular na cidade de Recife (PE) ao se negar apoiar o partido político o qual era contrário, chamou-se Filipéia de Nossa Senhora das Neves, Frederica e Finalmente Paraíba.
O nome Paraíba possuía para os indígenas o significado "rio ruim" e para os portugueses de "braço de mar, braço de rio".

In the middle of august in 1985, an agreement between the Indian and Portuguese population was set. The treaty was peaceful between the Indian and Portuguese representative, chefe Piragibe and João Tavares, respectively. In the same year João Pessoa city and state was founded, which was called Filipéia de Nossa Senhora das Neves, Frederica and finally Paraíba.
The name João Pessoa was a homage to the noted Paraiban son, who was brutally murdered in a café in Recife city (PE) when he refused to back up the political party to which he was contrary.
The name Paraíba had, for the Indians, the meaning of "bad river" and for the Portuguese "gulf", "river branch".
